Three Pagodas Of Dali
Standing
below Lanfeng peak, slightly to the northwest of Dali Old
Town, are three elegant pagodas, known as Chongsheng Santa, the Three Pagodas of saintly Worship. The outstanding landmarks
of the region, they were once part of the greatest templex
on the Dali plain. The Chongsheng Temple itself has long
since disappeared and now only the towers remain. The tallest
pagoda, measures nearly 70 meters. It was constructed about
850 under the guidance of engineers from Chang¡¯an, capital of the Tng Dynasty, and is similar in many ways
to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda in that city. The two smaller
pagodas, each with ten tiers and standing 42 meters high, were built 200 years later and have characteristics of architecture
from the Chinese South (1127-1279 ).
